In Grades 5 and 6, students begin transitioning toward greater independence through a departmentalized schedule, moving between classrooms throughout the day and learning from teachers who specialize in specific subject areas.
Faith formation remains at the heart of the curriculum. Religion classes utilize the Sadlier We Believe program. Fifth-grade students focus on the Sacraments and their role in the life of the Church, while sixth-grade students explore God’s plan of salvation through the Old Testament in We Are God’s People, discovering how God’s saving actions throughout history lead to Jesus Christ and the New Testament.
Language Arts instruction combines the strengths of HMH Into Reading and HMH Into Literature, supplemented by Voyages Grammar and Vocabulary Workshop. Students deepen their reading comprehension, writing, grammar, and vocabulary skills while enjoying a new novel study each trimester that encourages critical thinking and meaningful discussion.
Mathematics continues with Eureka Squared, a rigorous, standards-based program that develops problem-solving skills, mathematical reasoning, and confidence. In Social Studies, fifth-grade students embark on a study of American History, while sixth graders broaden their perspective through an exploration of World History.
Science instruction through McGraw Hill Inspire Science challenges students to ask questions, investigate, and discover. Hands-on learning experiences encourage curiosity and a deeper understanding of the world around them.
Upper Elementary students also participate in unique traditions and rites of passage that make these years especially memorable. Fifth graders attend the renowned STARBASE STEM Academy at Hanscom Air Force Base, where they spend a week immersed in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through exciting, real-world experiences. Sixth-grade students engage in an annual deep dive into Charles Dickens’ timeless classic, A Christmas Carol, culminating in a special trip to experience a live theatrical production of the beloved story.
Through academics, faith formation, leadership opportunities, and memorable experiences, our Upper Elementary program helps students develop the skills, character, and confidence needed for success in Junior High and beyond.
Our Junior High program continues the strong academic foundation established in Middle School, utilizing the same high-quality curricula to ensure vertical alignment and a seamless progression of skills and content. During these formative years, students are challenged to think critically, work independently, and take increasing ownership of their learning as they prepare for the transition to high school.
Beyond academics, Grades 7 and 8 focus heavily on developing leadership, responsibility, and personal growth. Students are encouraged to become active contributors to the school community, taking on greater roles in school programming, liturgical celebrations, service initiatives, and Community Meetings.
One of the most meaningful traditions begins in Grade 7 when students are paired with a Kindergarten buddy. This special relationship continues through Grade 8, allowing students to serve as mentors and role models while building lasting connections across grade levels.
Junior High students also begin exploring future academic pathways and high school opportunities, receiving guidance and support as they prepare for this important transition. Through classroom experiences, leadership opportunities, and service-learning projects, students develop the confidence and skills necessary for success both inside and outside the classroom.
Students participate in a variety of enriching experiences throughout the year, including service projects, Science and Social Studies Fairs, and our beloved annual Spelling Bee. Every other spring, students travel to Washington, D.C., where they experience firsthand the history, government, and landmarks they have studied in the classroom. This memorable trip serves as a culminating educational experience and an opportunity to strengthen friendships while creating lifelong memories.
By the time they graduate, our Junior High students have grown into confident leaders, compassionate servants, independent learners, and young people prepared to excel in high school and beyond while living out the values of our Catholic faith.
